Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
Not that I believe in jinxing, but as many of you know, I obviously haven't had a good track record since moving here. I had a GREAT consult and OB visit! This amazingly friendly and outgoing OB (recommended to me by an area doula) actually brought up natural childbirth AND waterbirth and how he fully supports and encourages both...before I could even ask! Go figure?! He gave me the low-down on which hospitals were user-friendly (if you will), too. Note: We have like 10 hospitals around here. (Not that it matters much, because I'm still leaning much more toward homebirth, but if I keep up duel-care, it is good to know. ) He outright admitted that the "system" I had been going through is a baby factory - totally intervention-filled (3000+ babies per month) and he thinks it's ridiculous. His words were that people are just a number and herded in and out like cattle. hehe Talk about validation! I seriously never would have expected a Dr. to admit that...at all!
Other pluses:
He does a quick in-office u/s to check on baby at every visit, was appalled that I hadn't gotten my request for the nuchal translucency fulfilled in time, had no issue setting up a 20wk u/s for me, and I got the quad screen done today. The staff was pleasant, too...and is requesting my records themselves (I signed a release.) The Dr. thinks he can 'go over their heads' and call the lab I went to in Nov for my bloodwork...as well as the hospital for the Nov and Dec u/s. Oh...and since he does the u/s to check on baby's growth, he doesn't worry about mother's weight unless baby's not growing well, etc. (I told him that was a sensitive thing with me.)
The only not-so-great part? I'm a people pleaser and feel disloyal still planning to pursue a homebirth. With the laws the way they are, though, I'm pretty much stuck if I want hospital access (in case of an emergency), too. I never, in my wildest dreams, expected to find an OB like this... I think I already mentioned that my midwife is also a doula...so in the event that an emergency happened or that I had a hospital transfer for any reason, she already said she'd come as my doula.
Now I'm excited to find out when my 20wk will be. (It's being scheduled and then I'll be called.) This new doc also wants me back in two-weeks. Not sure why so soon already? I have another appt. on 1/29. Oh...and he really wanted to meet my DH, so asked them (he was with Austin, Spencer, & Ellie in the waiting room and Kiley was with me) in for the u/s. What a cool guy, huh? And to think that I had totally given up on male OBs!
I just hope and pray things stay positive! I went in today with pretty low-expectations, so this totally blew me away! If you made it this far...haha...thanks for reading. And thanks for all of your support through my rather crappy, whiny moments as well.
P.S. - Appt. was uneventful and baby was very active. HB was lower than it has been...about 145ish. My placenta is in front, but there doesn't seem to be a previa problem. Oh...he even looked for gender (to put in an envelope for us), but baby wouldn't cooperate today.

Re: Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
Thanks! I'm still feeling too edgy to completely relax about all of this (feels too good to be true)...but hopefully that will come with time and more positive experiences.
The tech we had at 14wks said that she wasn't sure enough yet to say one way or the other what she thought about gender. (That made me think maybe girl?) Today, though, was a smaller machine and the baby seemed to just not want to get into position at all. We got mostly side views and it was a quick u/s. S/he did wave at us! We got a neat pic of the hand. Of course, I know the HB "old wives' tale" has no supporting evidence...but this babe's rate has been down in the 140s this week and last...whereas s/he was in the 150s/160s before. That unscientifically made me think boy (even though I've heard "over 140 = girl" ) Who knows? I'm pretty clueless this time...hehehe

I have been on how many boards and still haven't figured out how to use the quote thingy so I do it the old way! lol
I am SOOOOO SOOOOOOO happy that you found a "hip" and cool doctor. It is nice to have a caregiver that you can feel comfortable with. No matter what you choose, you can't go wrong. If you have the mw, it sounds like she is great and willing to be your supportive doula if you had to go to the hospital for any reason. And it sounds like this doctor is extremely ok with natural births, water births, alternative methods etc. rather than THEIR own agenda. That is exciting! I wish there were MORE doctors out there who understood how awesome it is and how much easier it would actually make their jobs be!!! (bad english there lol) I feel really dumb with this pregnancy...like forgetting phone numbers that I KNOW...stuff like that. Anyway, there are so many- a majority who think that waterbirth contributes to infection and that is just wrong. In actuality it is more common to get infections from multiple vaginal checks during labor!! MORE common, yet they are happy as pie to do that! Hmmmm.
I always get off topic, I am the queen of OT That's me!!!
Anyway- it is so exciting to hear that you found someone, and I think that no matter what, you are covered.
I always heard that old wives tale thing too- 150 or above is a girl and below 150s is boy. It seems true, because I know people who had girls and the HB was always 150-160 or so. My kids were all boys and never above 150 except in the beginning. And sometimes it is opposite- some people have baby boys and they always had hbs in the 150 range. Aidan's was as low as 120-130 sometimes and the mw said that was normal. As long as the rate doesn't drop below 110 I think she said it was great. And he is healthy. I don't recall all the other ones. I think they were 130s and 140s mostly.

The day you deliver, outside will be warm. Your baby will arrive in the evening. After a labor lasting approximately 5 hours, your child, a girl, will be born. Your baby will weigh about 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and will be 17-1/2 inches long. This child will have blue eyes and dark hair.

Re: Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
My boys and nephew were in the 160's (along with my niece). So here it doesn't work out.
This baby is 140's, sometimes 150-some. Maybe girl? Who knows.

Hooray for a great appointment. I agree jump for joy all you want. After what you've been through, you deserve to be able to jump. Sounds like a great doctor and a great experience - even if it turns out to be only temporary.

He couldn't get away with it being as I insisted he come this time. LOL! (In reality, he's so great about that. He has no problem coming and always did with our first and second -- and usually third/sometimes fourth, it's just hard now with four kids, too. We have no sitters here yet even for an occasional date night, let alone Dr. appts.) It was really cool to me how the new OB was so eager to meet him and, once he found out he was in the waiting room (watching Ellie and doing math with the boys, LOL), he called him back.

Re: Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
That is SO awesome that you found an OB that you're comfortable with. I'm a huge advocate on going where I feel at ease...and heck, we give them our money, they should pay us some respect!
And I'm jealous that you get an u/s at every visit. Luckily we've been able to see ours at every visit for one reason or another, but I'm sure that'll slow down as things progress. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say I'd love to see my baby(s) everytime I go in. That's always the highlight of the visit.
I'm very happy for you! You must feel so relieved!

Re: Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
I am so incredibly happy that you finally found a great OB! That can make all the difference in a pregnancy. I think there is still a good chance that you are having a boy, do something for me, feel on the Inside of your ankle, right under the bone, you may be a little swollen there, and see if you feel a pulse on one side or the other, right in the soft tissue under the ankle bone and tell me what side is the strongest pulse. ( I Zone and can usually tell what the gender of the baby is just by feeling the feet, but with someone else telling me what side they feel it on it is a little harder but I still can tell usually within 80% what the gender is)

Everyone deserves to have a doctor they like! I am so happy for you! You more than deserve this after all you have been through. My OB usually does an u/s every appt too - which I LOVE!

Re: Dare I Jump For Joy? (long, but yay!)
Haha, Carman...no idea? I don't tend to swell and have rather bony ankles. I couldn't find my pulse there. I usually have to use my neck when checking HR during workouts as it's not easy finding my pulse in my wrists either (healthcare providers even have trouble).
