I have been researching infant carseats. It is getting time for me to buckle down and buy one, and since my inlaws sent me a check today to get something for the baby I also now have the funds. What type have others gotten, or found to be safe? My baby will be 9 years old in August, so needless to say I am way out of the loop. Looking for opinions and suggestions. Thanks!
I just bought 2 Graco Snugrides (between $70-$130). They work great and I haven't seen a recall on them. Another good carseat is a Baby Trend Latch/Loc ($80). really heavy, though.
Graco also makes a "Safe Ride" that go up to 30lbs for infants (that is like a year or a little more in a lot of cases). I thought about that one but the price is $125-$130 normally.

We used a Graco Snugride with our last two and recently bought a new one for this baby. They work perfectly for us since our babies don't tend to hit the height/weight limit until one...or pretty darn close. (Our first was the only one who got there sooner.) My almost 2.5yo still isn't 30lbs.

I am a huge Britax fan except for the infant seat and I am hoping they will come out with a 5 point Booster. They graco seems easier and less bulky than the Britax, however if a Britax feels comfortable for you I say you can't go wrong with one. As for Infant seats I do like the Graco Snug Ride or the Graco Safe Seat.
I went with Graco Snug Ride for my first two.. but for this one we went with Graco Safe Seat. Almost the same thing but they look more stylish now. We went by the carrier handle and weight.. since DH will be the one to carry him around he picked what seemed more comfy to carry around. I know they have strict standards on car seats so you can't really harm your baby by choosing any major brand. I've only heard negatives on Cosco chairs and that was years ago so no telling if that was just rumor and it came from one person. Whatever chair you buy, just make sure it is installed correctly and doesn't move an inch. They have to be in there really tight. I like those with a carrier that detaches from a base so you can move the baby in without disturbing him/her. I've heard really good things about Britax but I couldn't afford those prices. I'm going to invest in the next chair this one goes to since he will be in that one longer. I call that the mack daddy chair.
Oh, don't forget the mirror so you can glance at them while driving from your rear view mirror.

We have a snugride from Ava that we will be using again with this one. The one thing I recommend watching for is the front adjustment strap, for tightening the harness. Some snug rides have the adjustment in the front and others have it in the back. Ours has it in the back and you have to make sure you have it snug before you snap them in the base. Then getting them out, if it's nice and snug can be aggravating if you just want to lift them out of the seat rather than taking the whole seat out - with the back adjustment. With the front, you just lift one lever/push a button on the front bottom of the seat and then pull the straps forward to loosen it up or pull the strap at the bottom to snug it up.
My top 2 choices are the Graco Safeseat (I had this for my dd) and the Chicco Keyfits, there is a 22# and 30# version. This is the seat I always reccomend for those having multiples or a preemie, it's rated from 4# and super nice. I loved my Safeseat though and Ilana used it till 16 mos. She could still be using it now, barely, at 18 mos, but we switched a while ago.
For the op who mentioned Britax, they do have a new harnessed booster, the Frontier.

We have the Snugride. We almost bought the SafeSeat for Kate but apparently they were both rated the same when we bought them and the SnugRide was lighter. I am thankful I didn't get one that held too big of a baby because once Kate hit 6 months, I couldn't wait to get her out of it. It was too heavy for me to carry around!
