Default Amnio Rescheduled

My doctor did not feel it was safe to try to do my amnio today. My placenta is completely covering the front of my uterus and he said at 16 1/2 weeks, he felt it was too risky to the baby for him to try to do it today. He said at any angle he would end up having to go through a portion of the placenta and baby is too close to the edges of the placenta (not enough space to make the draw) which is the only area that he felt would be a safe part of the placenta to have to go through.

So we wait 3 more weeks to give my placenta time to shift and move up as the baby and uterus grows. At that time, we will be right at 20 weeks and he will go ahead and to my Big U/S at the same time so we should (if baby cooperates) be able to see the gender and not have to wait on the amnio results for that part. He tried really hard to look today, but baby has a pretty big cord already and it was completely laying between the legs.

On a good note, my BP was good for a third time in a row! And fortunately I only have to wait 3 weeks instead of 4 to go back. Thanks for all the well wishes, thoughts and prayers today.

I'm sorry you have to wait, but so very glad that your Dr. has baby's safest interest in mind. You're in great hands!! (I'm sure you know...but isn't it awesome to really, really know?) How great that you go back in in three weeks and get your big u/s then, too! I don't know what's up with our 'hiding' babies or up-front placentas, though? They just want to keep us in suspense, huh

I knew my placenta was up front, due to the difficult time I have finding baby's with my doppler, but I didn't think it would be totally covering the front. He went all the way down to the pubic bone trying to find a spot where he could get the needle past it (YIKES on the thought of them sticking me that low!) but it was even covering that low. He didn't mention any previa (I'm assuming that's only when it's across the cervix right?). I was ok with waiting. The safety of the baby and not jeopardizing this pregnancy is most important. I have an AWESOME doc. He takes good care of me. And to think back when I got PG with Ava, he really didn't want to deal with a "high risk" pregnancy, but I talked him into it and he said I ended up being his best patient of the year!

He is a good doctor. The further along you are, the less the risk gets for any potential issues and the more options they will have for drawing fluid. Mine was done at 18w+3d or so. When I had it done last time at 16weeks, it was much more painful (skin was stretched out more this time).

I'm sorry you have to wait, though. Glad your BP was good! How did everything else look?

That's tough that you have to go through it later...but it sounds like you have a great DR and I'm glad everything else is looking good.

Thanks for that info emuone. My first amnio (with Ava) was done at 18 weeks also. DH was really nervous about doing it this early anyway.

Otherwise baby was active moving around waving its arms. To me everything looked proportionate to how it should be at this stage. He mainly kept in the lower region for DH hoping to see a penis - DH wants a boy so bad; although he says two little girls kissing him on each cheak would be great too. The cord was strategically in the wrong place to see anything though.
