*Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
So, yesterday morning I posted that I lost my mucus plug that morning! It was tinged with brown yuck and I had, had brown yuck all morning after losing it. I was interested to see what my Dr. said at my appt yesterday.
This is what happened: I went to the appt, where I had my NST, my baby did great and I was off of the monitor in like 15 min. Then the Dr. came in and I told her about what had happended that morning, she said she was going to do an internal exam, when she did the exam she said that my cervix had blood on it, and I may start my show* and that it was thinning out, but no dialation. I got a little paniced and started to ask alot of questions becuase I am only 34 weeks prego, she told me that if she had to make an estimation she would say that the baby would arrive in my 35-36th week and that there was no way I was making it to my scheduled c-section date. She said that due to my utuerus deformation I was doing better than expected and that she fully expected to see this happening around 33-36 weeks with me. She told me that she was about 90% sure my cervix would not rippen enough for the baby to come this week so not to panic. We talked about alot of questions I had, mostly about the NICU then I left, feeling excited at first then very scared, so I have some questions,
What week did you ladies start to thin without dialation? How long after being told you were thinning did labor start?
Dh and I had our tour of the hospital scheduled for last night, so we went to the tour which was not all that helpful, but oddly enough the lady toured us right through the NICU, I thought that when I had talked to the DR. earlier that day that I would be ok with it if my bugger had to be in there for a 24 hour observation (that is alll they were expecting him to need becuase he is well over 5lbs. and looks healthy) but when I went in I immedialty went into tears, DH was trying to comfort me and lead me toward the door out, I felt so dumb, but it was so hard seeing all those babies in there away from their mammas and some of them were the size of DH's hand, so I spent all night last night up worrying about my babies possible stay, but I just wondered,
Have any of you, besides Sara of course, had a child stay in the NICU? What week were they born? How long did they have to stay? How did you deal with it?

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
With my first child I went to the dr's at 4pm and they checked me. I hadnt even thinned out. She told me I had atleast another week or two to go. At 1am my water broke, at 9:05am he was born. Anything is possible =)
My youngest DS was born at 37 weeks, and because of respiratory distress, he was in there for a week. He was fine after the first 24 hours, but then they wanted to treat him for possible infection, then they wanted him to gain weight before they let him go....

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
I'm sorry you are more nervous - but it sounds like you are right on track as far as the Dr. is concerned. I don't have any nicu experience to share. Hopefully you still have a week or 2 to wait.
As far as dilation - I barely started to dilate w/ dd at 8 days overdue. I can't quite remember w/ ds, but I think I was barely dilated at my last apt. then 2 days later I was in labor (6 days overdue) I think there is a huge range of time to ripen/dilate depending on the woman.
I'll keep you & your baby boy in my thoughts.

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
Try to relax it will all be ok You are at a good safe stage in your pgcy now.
As far as if your baby is born in the next wk or so it is quite likely he'll go in the nICU first of all b/c he's a BOY They don't do as well as girls...it may only be for bloodsugars regulation...our second child was born at 38wks and was 8lbs7oz but was still in the nicu for 24hrs! SO just be prepared for that but thats ok! Your baby will look like a GIANT in there next to all those tiny precious babies!!
As far as thinning / dialation...I guess your doc knows what she's talking about re: your situation but it can soooooo vary. My sil was told she'd never make it to 34wks...was 3cm dialated, thinned a having reg. contractions...and she was induced at 41 wks!!! Just be prepared that it can go in a different path---I was 3.5cm for a few wks with regular contractions and didn't go into labor for 2wks. I hope it happens fast for you...but I hope he waits til 37wks or so

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
No NICU experience myself, just ppl I know.My oldest was in special care nursery, but only for a day adn night, and I still got him for feedings brought to my room. My cousin just had her baby on saturday at 35 weeks, 4 days and she is still in NICU for body temp regulation, and bc she did not have the sucking reflex so has to be tube fed til she can latch. Best of luck. Hopefully you make it til at least 37 weeks, and can avoid NICU.

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
With DS my first internal was at 36 weeks and at the point I was 1 cm and 75% effaced. So not sure when my thinning really started. But I did deliver less than 2 weeks later.
Sounds like progress!

I wouldn't worry too much. My sister walked around(uncomfortably) for a good 2 weeks at 3cm before the doc decided to induce. It's hard to tell what would happen...

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
I dont have any experience with NICU and they never tell me how effaced I am at my appointments, only how dialated I am. I hope that your little one will hold out for a while longer!
I have heard that little boys tend to have more breathing difficulties than girls though. But at the same time boys or girl I think it can depend on the baby. I have heard of some that are born at 35 weeks that do just fine and dont have to go to nicu at all and then others that have to stay a week or 2. Then I have also heard of full term babies that have breathing difficulties and have to stay in the nicu for a day or a week. I guess you can never know for SURE until the baby comes.
*HUGS*!

Re: *Update on Appt, some questions, and my tour* Long
I wouldn't worry too much. I've been at 3 cm for a week at least, and still not in labor! As far as the NICU goes, I haven't had any experience, but will this time around. Most times I think they just put them in there for close observation if there is any risk of problems. My situatiomn is much different than anyone else's tho, so what happens in my case won't be relevant to you. Good luck!

Try not to worry too much! Don't want to stress the baby out! Hopefully baby can stay put for a few more weeks and you won't even have to worry about a NICU stay!
