Default Travel to High Altitude?

I was just wondering if anyone knows about traveling to high altitude when pregnant. We are leaving on Saturday for a trip to Colorado, which we told the doctor but we never mentioned that DH's family lives in Vail, which is 10,000ft. I suddenly started worring today. I read stuff that says don't travel over anywhere from 7,000ft to 12,000 ft depending on the website I look at. Most seem to say that it should be ok if you are not active but other articles worry me. I will be spending most of the time with my parents in Colorado Springs which is only 6,000ft so I am not too worried about that. I have never gotten altitude sickness but I know that a lot of people do when they go to Vail. I did once when I had a couple drinks in Denver before going up the mountain but I won't be doing that this time anyway. (well never again, I was miserable all weekend.) I think I will call my doctor but I'm not sure if he will get back to me in time. I think I am just being paranoid.

I have those typo days . My concern is that people who live in the mountains have acclimated to it so it is not a problem (I think they have more red blood cells, not really sure). Anyway their bodies are used to having less oxygen. I think you are right, it is probably ok though as long as I take it easy. It just seems like I worry about EVERYTHING lately.

I think you will be fine as long as you don't over do it. People in those areas are more accustomed to the higher altitudes like you said. We will be flying into Denver and then into San Francisco next weekend. Our trip will br pretty short there though, lol.

I know what you mean about worrying about everything....its hard not too. At dinner with my DH the other night I think I asked our waitress a dozen times if my drink was a virgin cocktail before I would touch it and then I made DH taste it to make sure....LOL.

I was kinda wondering the same thing but more about the flying part. I have to fly back east on Jan. 15th. I think you will be ok if you take it easy. You may notice the change more with being PG but I do not think you are in danger. I would call your doc just to make sure so you can put your mind at rest.

HAVE FUN!!!!!

So...my DR. already called back. I feel a little bad but when I called at 4:30 I told the receptionist that it wasn't important and what it was about. I fully expected him to call back tomarrow at the earliest but he called at 6:30 on his day off (I'm not going to feel bad since he knew what it was about ). I guess that is a benefit of living in a small town. Anyway, he said not to worry as long as I stay hydrated and listen to my body. Said the baby's hemoglobin is "sticky", so basically the baby will get all the oxygen he needs and leave me with the leftovers. I can handle that. Glad I called because now I can enjoy the trip guilt free . My mom has been "holding back" on baby shopping until I get there, which works for me when I get to shop and she pays .

Sounds like you got your answer but I wanted to say when I was pg last time, we were supposed to go to a wedding in Denver and my dr told me NOT to go. But at the time my baby was having heart problems. If I were you, I would ask to go in for a quick baby check right before you leave. I am super paranoid about Denver, my inlaws live there and I pretty much refuse to visit them. When we went last year and our youngest was only 5 months, I was paranoid that he would turn blue from lack of oxygen (I must have heard that somewhere). Plus I get horrible altitude sickness. I'm born and raised here in the SF Bay Area in the golden state - 8th generation. Sea level is in my blood, my people just don't do well in other states, LOL.

I've been to Denver (and Vail) many times, and I live just above sea level in CA. Just wanted to echo your Dr's advice to drink lots of water. Just keep a water bottle w/you and drink, drink drink. Other than that I was totally fine & never had altitude sickness. Hope you have a great time. It is so beautiful there!!
