I'm a little worried that I may be changing formula too much, even though the doctor says it's ok. Julian started out on similac advance in the hospital, and had his situation with bloody stool, which they think was caused by the formula. So when I brought him home, I switched him to similac with iron at the doctor's suggestion. This formula gave him diarrhea, so I tried the Nutramigen that my sister gave me. Now he's constipated! Poor kid, just can't seem to adjust to it right. So now I'm getting ready to try similac sensitive at the doctor's suggestion. Hopefully it works for him, but doesn't it shock their system to keep changing their formula? I just hope the similac sensitive works for him and we don't have to switch AGAIN!!
I hope it works for him. With Tianna we had a lot of issues with formula. She was on Similac first, then neosure because she wasn't gaining, then it was Enfamil. Finally we settled with Good Start and she did great on it. We started Kiki with Good Start and have had no issues at all (knock on wood)
i never had a problem with ds. I mean I used similac mostly and will this time. But I also got Parents choice from walmart.... SO i was switching between the two of them often. What ever I got that week. lol Really his system i think prefered the walmart stuff.... I plan on using that again. But i have a few similas free samples too... PLUS.... I will bf at first.... so his system should be a little even out and older by the time i used formula. lol
We switched Aislyn's formula around alot too due to gas issues. I had the same worries you have, and i'm still not sure what the answer is. I know we ended up using the Good Start, and we really liked that...
It takes a while to find the right one sometimes. You do need to give each about a solid week between switching them unless there is a severe allergy issue just to let their body adjust though, and see how they will be more long-term on it. The first few days (except with allergies) are just transitioning so aren't always how they will be like on it longer. Make sense?
Good Start is good for a lot of babies like PP said. Similac Advance is almost identical to the Nutramigen, so I doubt there is any point in that change. The only reason to stay with Similac is for WIC - you don't need a TON of documentation to get it covered, only the prescription copy (which they get). To go with other brands you have to have a medical history for why the others won't work, prescriptions, etc (at least here).
I started with breastmilk, went to Good Start, and ended back with the Similac Advanced. She had horrible gas pain with the Good Start, which I understand is very unusual, but happened. She's doing fine now.
With DS#1, we started with Similac, but it didn't agree with him. We finally found Enfamil Gentlease and that worked best. Once his digestive system matured, we went with Good Start.
Generally, with Enfamil and Similac, switching to the same type but different brands won't make a difference... Enfamil is 40% casein and 60% whey, whereas Similac is 60% casein and 40% whey... most generics are 50/50... not much difference really. Ofc Good Start is all whey which is why some babies who are allergic to other cow's milk based formulas do ok on GS, because it's the casein they have issues with.
If you keep having problems you could always look into donated breastmilk, generally you don't pay for the milk, just for the donor mom's pump rental (if applicable), shipping, and storage bags, etc. Donation
Above site helps connect donors with babies who need BM.

similac advance is nowhere NEAR being the same as nutramigen. similac advance is a milk based formula. nutramigen is a hydroylsate (sp?) formula. its an extensively broken down hypoallergenic formula for babies that have a milk protein allergy. if your baby has blood in his poop, he probably has a milk allergy therefore i would stick with the nutramigen.
Actually I have already switched to Similac Sensitive, which is also lactose free, and he is doing much better than he was on the Nutramigen. Thank you though.
