Icon9 spit up and vomiting

Nathaniel is spitting up sooo much, several times after every feeding, and sometimes it's pretty forceful (more vomiting than spitting up). I've spoke to his ped about it, and she wanted to wait until he was done with his antibiotics before changing anything, (which he is done with them now) but it gets so frustrating, and I know it bothers him because he cries afterwards. I am giving him breastmilk in a bottle, so I know it's not a problem with his formula. the ped mentioned changing my diet. but I'm not sure what diet changes to make. anybody have or had this problem.. any suggestions would be very appreciated

K, dietary, usually it is spicy stuff, peppers, or milk products. Before doing that though, I would check your bottles, and if he is getting air through them. If he is sucking in air too, his spit up could be more vomit bc of the air flowing up with it, making it more difficult to keep down. Make sure you are angling him and the bottle, and that he is "latching" onto the bottle properly so he gets milk not air. Also, maybe try burping by rubbing his tummy, not patting, half way through the feed or even 1/4, may help to break up any air he is getting in, before his tummy is full and therfore he will spit up less milk each time, and then it will be more spit up than vomit. Best of luck!

Diet is usually milk, then dairy, then other products... if you want to try elimination diet it'll take a few days to work.

You could also try to feed less milk, but more often... That way there's not projectile spit up from being over-full

We had reflux with DS1, and it stopped around 6 months when we started solids (bananas... good to calm stomachs!).

Just saw he was on ABX... antibiotics can be pretty bad on gut health, maybe go to a health food store and get some infant probiotics to promote good gut health? It can only help and will reduce the chances of getting thrush from the ABX.

thanks for all the advice guys. unfortunately, he seems to have gotten worse today (either that or he is ill) he has been taking in about an ounce at a time and then vomiting about half of it back up. I guess we will be making another trip to the ped tomorrow... I'm not really sure what to do at this point, with that much coming back up, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I should just switch him to formula. I thought breast fed babies were supposed to be less gassy and spit up less.

they are, so if he is having breast issues, he prob will have more formula issues than you are having now. It is made from cows milk, so harder on the belly for them to digest than human milk. Best of luck at the pedi. He could have reflux, which won't really be impacted y whatever you are feeding him. That is the cardiac sphyncter muscle being underdeveloped and treatment varies for it. I hope you get a good answer tomorrow that will help you out.

My niece was a premie and had a bad case of reflux with projectile vomiting all the time. She even had trouble gaining weight because she couldnt keep anything down. Her Peds put her on some reflux medicine and she was a different baby and started gaining weight! Good luck at the pediatrician. I hope you get some answers. I just wanted to give you a success story if it is relux...

DS had reflux and spit up a ton, but we never medicated. Ped said as long as he was gaining SOMEthing, it was fine. And believe me, he literally would throw up almost as much as he ate... insane amounts!

Remember there are separate growth charts for BF and FF babies too, and most peds don't have them...
kellymom.com :: Chart: Average Growth of Breastfed Boys
Because sometimes a BF baby can look like failure to thrive on the CDC charts but be totally normal on the WHO charts (like mine, lol)
