Icon5 Old wive's tales to start labor?...

Brandy said something in Janice's thread that made me wonder...

What old wive's tales have you heard to start labor? Let's share and make a list and maybe some of the babies will come sooner than expected! I'm getting anxious and I am due after most of you!

These are the ones that I've heard of so far, no clue if any of them work though:

Walking
Sex
Caster Oil (but this is supposed to be a messy one....)
Drinking Raspberry Leaf Tea
Spicy Food

I know, I know! But man when I get the okay from the doctor, I want to be ready! I am trying for a VBAC and don't want to do the c/s if I can go into labor on my own. I have a friend who makes Indian food and she's on standby for dinner for week 37!

Sex, I had the dr write a prescription for it when I was pg with Aiden. It actually does help things along. An internal (sweep) can help as well. Castor oil... my bf and sis used this and yeah, for both labor started, but with my sis she had baby super fast and the nurse said that is a major risk, bc castor oil starts things, whether baby is actually ready or not, so they can go in distress. And once you take it you can never go back. Oh neither of them can handle the taste of OJ anymore either bc of it. Apparently it is NASTY. lol Walking, supposively bc babies head is bouncing off the cervix, but I walked everywhere with mine trying to get things going, and it really did not get things started. Though it is good to do anyways. I have heard things about eggplant and spicy foods too.

Basil and Oregano used generously are both known to cause labor to begin, so, if you're a fan of Italian food, then thats good news for you!

I'm another that can vouch for sex working....it didn't send me into hard labor but it did start me dilating both times and that's just as good if you ask me (the further you can be dilated to start off the labor the better IMO! )

Let's see...other than the ones mentioned here already:

Black or blue Cohosh herbs (only under medical supervision though...)
Egg Plant Parmesan
A1 sauce and Mac n Cheese
Relaxation (to prevent adrenaline release in the body-which inhibits labor)
Some swear by mopping the floor (or any strenuous activity I guess)

"Some swear by mopping the floor" I've heard a lot of stories about this one - mostly from my mom's generation, aunts etc.
My floors could use a good mopping! I also did a ton of walking last night & have been raking the yard the last couple days. I was going to try for a little activity w/ dh but I fell asleep. oops!

Lurking...I hope you don't mind me sharing my list of labor inducers/ primers. I researched them a ton (from books and talking to btdt moms). HIH.

I like to divide up the options into "Primers" and "Inducers." The primers should be safe for almost all women and should be safe at any time in the weeks preceding labor. The inducers are best left alone until you are at least 39 weeks (or if you are trying to go into labor naturally and you have a medically necessary induction scheduled prior to that date). For all of them it is best to talk to your care provider first. You are likely to get different opinions. If that happens, consult reputable books and other sources of information to help you make the right decision for you and your baby.

The Primers:

-Relaxation. Stress can suppress the flow of oxytocin. Sometimes reading a good book, going out to dinner or taking a warm bath can be the best things to bring on labor.

-Sex. Semen contains prostaglandins which ripen the cervix. Orgasm can trigger contractions.

-Walking bouncing/rocking on a birthing ball. Gravity can help the baby descend into the pelvis. Any pressure they put on the cervix can help make changes.

-Raspberry LEAF tea. Will help tone your uterus and make contractions before, during and after labor more effective. Buy this at health food stores. Drink 1-2 cups a days starting any time in pregnancy. You can drink more cups as your pregnancy reaches term. Just keep up with drinking water too.

-Evening Primrose Oil. It will help soften your cervix and hasten effacement and dilation. Start around 37 weeks. Buy it at drugstores. About 1500mg a day either ingested orally or inserted vaginally (lay down for a while after inserting). Oral is thought to be more effective.

The Inducers:

-Nipple Stimulation. Releases oxytocin. Can be done with hand or breast pump. Good alternative to pitocin to pick up labor as augmentation. Can cause contractions that are too strong so it is best to do this with supervision. If you do this, stop as soon as contractions get started so you minimize the risk of uterine hyperstimulation. Talk to your care provider before attempting this. Inadvertent n.s. during foreplay or intercourse shouldn't be to worrisome.

-Membrane Stripping. Stirs up prostaglandins. It is done by your care provider using their finger to separate the amniotic sac from the cervix. B/c of the potential for infection and rupture of membranes (though small, they are real) it is best to wait till 40+ weeks and do it as an alternative to chemical induction. Stick with sex otherwise (same thing, less risky though). Be sure and tell your caregiver that you don't want this done b/c some do it without your knowledge. If GBS+ it is best to avoid this because you don't want to push the GBS up further into your body (they can hitch a ride up and in). keep in mind too that m.s. can cause spotting, loosen the plug and cause cramping- all things that can make you think you are in pre/ early labor but they are actually just side effects. So, there are emotional risks too- it can get your hopes up. Only works about 20% of the time so don't go into having it done with any lofty expectations of success. If it does work, it can take up to 72 hours.

-Acupressure. There are various points that are supposed to trigger labor. One is the roof of your mouth so suck on a lollipop or your thumb. The other is 4 fingerwidths up on your calf from the inside left ankle. Apply pressure for 15 seconds, release and repeat.

Options that are best avoided (talk to your care provider for sure before trying any of them):

-Castor oil. The biggest risk is dehydration from excessive bowel movements. This can decrease the amniotic fluid levels and cause maternal problems as well. It can also cause cramping which is unpleasant and possibly mistaken for contractions. Hemorrhoids as a result of the bms can be unpleasant. A really rapid labor is a possible result too, especially if you take more than "recommended." There have been no conclusive studies indicating whether it can cause baby to pass meconium in utero. Some moms take that to mean it won't happen; others take it to mean that it could happen. One possible reason for a connection is that moms try this when they are post date and baby is already at a greater risk of passing meconium. Impossible to know if it would have happened with or without the castor oil. Meconium would probably be more a result of a fast labor (more stress to baby) than the castor oil. Castor oil can also not be undone if problems arise. Finally, if your cervix is not favorable, you have very few prelabor signs and you haven't hit your EDD yet then the odds of it working are not too high. If you are right on the verge of labor then it might cause some activity. Weigh out the pros and cons before proceeding. If you still want to try it then stay safe by drinking plenty of sports drink.

-Herbs. Blue Cohosh can significantly raise your blood pressure. Black cohosh can too to a lesser degree. If you are anemic they can be risky. There isn't enough known about the herbs to show that they are safe. It would be best to avoid the herbal methods.

Fine Options for just about anyone
Miscellaneous Methods:
-Fresh pineapple, balsamic dressing, spicy foods, eggplant parmasean, bumpy car ride, exercise... Some of them have some science behind them. Spicy foods can irritate the bowels like castor oil but to a lesser degree. Fresh pineapple has some chemical in it that works as a prostaglandin to help ripen the cervix.

Everyone already has the ones down I was gonna say. Sex worked for us a couple times. I wont be doing that this time though. Dh and I have not talked in a week exactly today. This is the longest in 19 years we havent talked. I have tried castor oil, GROSS!!!!!! Not only once but a couple times. It did taste a tiny bit better with rootbeer. It causes your stomach to tighten but has never put me in labor. Walking and squatting has also worked for me in the past. I honestly think that if baby isnt ready he/she wont come until they are ready anyways.

With DD I walked up and down the stairs 50 times a day for a week and that didn't work at all. But then I was at a funny friend's laughing hysterically, and sure enough, I went into labor! This time, seems like everything gives me contractions, walking, doing laundry, sitting too long.....

I guess I should cut out the fresh pinapples. I have been totally addicted to them for most of my pregnancy (if they weren't so expensive I may have overdosed on them ). Had no idea they could induce labor .

Well, I'm not sure exactly what did it for me, but here's waht we did:

A peppermint oil foot rub, stimulating a certain spot on your ankle
A peppermint oil bath
Sex
Evening Primrose Oil

These are things we spent our weekend doing and lo and behold, I'm holding my baby in my arms!
