Default Nitrous Oxide

Has anyone taken this during the third trimester? I have a dental appointment next week. It is for something that cannot wait. My dentist said to ask OB if nitrous is safe for me to take. My doctor isn't a real doctor (he is fresh out of medical school) and of course he didn't know. He looked it up, and couldn't come up w/ a definitive answer.

I have read mixed things online, but would love to hear of any personal experiences. According to Storknet it is okay: Anesthetic During Pregnancy at the Experts Corner at StorkNet

I'm not sure what to do yet.

Not to make you nervous but they think my emergecy root canal may have contributed to my water breaking, so you may want to pre-med with antibiotics to prevent ANY infection

I've heard both...that it's okay and then another source says it's not. If it were me, I'd avoid it just to be safe and get the local freezing instead.

Oh man, now I'm scared Sarah. I have to go to the dentist on Monday for a broken filling. I hope nothing happens.

Heather, I'm sorry I don't know about the nitrous oxide thing. I hope you get a definite answer somewhere. Good luck!!!

Definately call your OB. I had to have a root canal when I was 8 months pregnant with my DS and they just used novacaine. They gave me tylenol 3 for paid after wards but I didn't need it.

Ann-Marie-
No worries. it wasn't the actual root canal. I broke a tooth, they rebuilt it, it got infected THEN i had to have a root canal.
So it may have been the infection from the abcess that MAYBE got into my bloodstream.

I'd ask your OB about pre-medding just in case

Thats a tough one.... SInce your doctor is fresh out of Med-school, and doesnt seem to know, I would recommend maybe asking someone in his practice, or maybe if you called L&D and spoke with someone there, they could tell you.
Hope you find the info you need!

Im not exactly sure. When I went for my cleaning, I needed to get a couple fillings and a root canal. My dentist said to get the ok from my ob first. I talked it over with my ob and he said it was fine. Now I havent gotten the root canal yet, I am going to wait until after the baby is born. I have had a couple fillings done, and the dentist did clean out my bad tooth and fill it with some medicine to get me through until after the baby gets here. I hope you can get an answer. Is it something you could get a local with?
