Hey everyone! Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas/New Year!
Ours was quite a bit different than we expected...as planned we left Dec 18th to drive 15hrs to Edmonton Alberta (canada) to meet dh's family at the massive mall (and indoor water park etc ). We did...on Wednesday...had a wonderful day with everyone even did a bit of a christmas exchange that night. Had so much fun!
thursday morning we were supposed to all meet at the water park ... in the foyer of the hotel I met dad (fil) he was going out looking for chiropractors for mom (mil) (they also live about 14hrs away...the opposite direction...). She supposedly woke with bad back pain. that was too bad, of course we were all bummed as they so much wanted to play with the grandkids in the waterpark.
well they did that then went on to an acupunturist for an hour before coming back t the hotel with DH's sister (a nurse from Africa...missionary nurse) assessed her and felt she should head to the ER as her blood pressure was low. That was thurs evening. there she was on morphine for extreme back pain but they couldnt' figure out what was going on.
Friday morning it was determined she was in septic shock (blood poisoning) and we knew this was very serious as 1 in 3 die from septic shock. dh's family is all very medical including dad being a pharmacist and mom a nurse too.
they still could not find the source of her infection...but transferred her to ICU by friday evening. there were several hours in there that we were not allowed to see her b/c they were doing sooooo many tests etc on her. by friday night at 7:30pm the ICU doc and surggeon came to see us...saying things were not looking good and it appeared mom had 'nycrotizing faciitis" (the very rare and feared FLESH EATING DISEASE) ...omgosh we were all sitting in complete shock as they told us she needed emergency exploratory surgery to see if her leg (that was showing symptoms as well) could be amputated to save her life...as well as her colon removed as they had seen on cat scan that her colon was very infected. they also todl us due to her very unstable condition she could very well die on the OR table! well 4hrs later, the docs came back to see us saying mom did indeed survive but things were very bad. they basically opened her leg and stomach and could do nothing b/c it was soooo severely too late. They said her entire abdominal cavity was infected and basically came to tell us she had less than 24hrs to live!!! can you imagine????? being totally healthy on christmas holidays with your family and this happen??? she lived 15more hrs and died...despite being on the most maxed out extent of life support available with 4 blood pressure meds on their highest possible dose all given simultaneously...finally her body just quit. kidneys quit, liver was severely damaged and by looking in her eyes they could tell she had significant brain damage...and then her blood pressure and heart rate just slowed down over a few hrs til it simply stopped

this was all dec 22 15hrs from their home in Manitoba. So...needless to say our plans changed...we then went on to manitoba another 15hrs the other direction ... for the funeral. dec 27th. we just got home after driving 23hrs from manitoba to home...on Jan 1. so christmas was celebrated with our children jan 2...which obviously was a no issue in light of all that happened. i should say...mom was only 57yrs old...adn they were in the middle of building their dream home

still worked full time et c etc.
