Default I got him off the shield! Now what?

I have been nursing Carter with a shield since birth. And I find it annoying to have to get it all the time, the thing fills with milk and then when he pulls away I have milk all over my shirt it has been a pain! So today I decided we will use that no more and I just squeezed to let him get a taste of milk and he latched right on he nursed all day with no shield!!! BUT now I have questions when he sucks it feels kinda prickley sometimes, is this normal? And is his latch wrong if his nose is pressed up against me also? I feel like he can't breath he dosen't seem to mind though

If he could not breathe he would pull away. The top of his nose probably is smushing against your boob, but if you look to the sides, he should be able to get air in there. The prickly feeling is prob bc your nipples are a bit sensitive after being protected by the shield so long. So happy for you that you were able to transition him off the shield. Sounds like it was a bit of a pita for you to deal with.

Lucky you!! Brooke latched on and off in the hospital. I started using the shield because she was losing weight. I wish I could get her off it! It is becoming a pita especially at night. I know what you mean about the filing up with milk and now when she is feeding the milk actually leaks out of the shield and down my stomach and all over her face UGH! I hope I am as lucky.

About the "prickly" feeling..totally normal. I remember getting it when she latched in the hospital and everytime I winched my DH would say "good" because he knew she was latching. And about the nose... Just like Rossa said he would pull off if he can't breathe - that is what the lactation consultant told me (I asked the same question).

I'm so happy for you...what a relief!! I hope Brooke does the same (UGH)

I agree the shield was a pita. Glad you got off it. They had me use it at the hospital but I had the same problem, plus it usually stuck to his face instead of me. He seems to have an easier time without it too. The lactation consultants told me his nose is supposed to be against me, but Dylan does have a hard time breathing so I press my boob in.

Yay for no sheild! I had a friend that had to nurse with a nipple shelid for 15 months!! She hated that thing!

The prickly feeling sounds totally normal to me and should get better with time. And yep, his sounds like it is right on!

WTG!

Yay, that is wonderful news. I was also going to comment now that he is latching on I bet you are getting more sensation and I wonder if the prickly feeling that you are feeling now is you milk letting down?? Does it happen just when he latches on at 1st and then goes away or is it a constant prickly feeling??
