Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
Anyone familiar with it? I think that's what Ian has/had. Last week he had a cold and a sore throat, tons of sneezing. Since about Thurs/Friday last week, his cheeks are bright pink....I mean really pink.
I looked online tonight cuz it's weird with his cheeks. I think he's fine now, but apparently it can cause complications for pregnancy if I get it. Which sucks cuz my throat has started to get scratchy this week.
I think I'll call his doc tomorrow to see if they agree that it's a risk that he had it and to see what they think the risks are to me. Anyone familiar with this???

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
I know it can cause miscarriages...but you are past that point. Fifth Disease is part of the chicken pox family... My throat has been sore too today.. I think there is a lot going around...My cheeks are always flushed.. Let me know what the doc says

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
The little bit I know about it is that they worry because it is in the same family as the CMV virus which can cause birth defects and other complications. BUT the good news is that you are in your third trimester, which they usually worry about more in the 1st trimester, and also a lot of women are exposed to some form of this virus in their lifetime, and have antibodies against it so they dont develop it and it doesnt effect the baby. But if you are worried and he does have it then call your doc, and if they feel that it is necessary they can do something called a TORCH panel which is a blood test and test for exposure to the virus. Good luck, I am sure everything will be fine!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
I was really scared that I had this when I was so sick. I'm a nanny and who knows what "my kids" picked up at preschool and other places. But everything turned out fine. I'd be interested to see if that's what Ian has. Be sure to keep us updated!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
Yeah, I think it's more of a risk during the 1st trimester....but I could be wrong. I know when I was newly pg with DD and working at the daycare, they wouldn't let me work until it was out of the building. Hope you get some answers!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
Thanks ladies! I think the fact that I'm in my 3rd tri, I should be ok, but will call to see if my OB has any concerns. It was news to me about this, so reading on the web can really freak one out (I really shouldn't read too much ).
I'll let you know what I hear!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
The web always freaks me out. It is a good place to go for info, but sometimes it is info overload!! I think you will also be fine since you are in your 3rd trimester. I'm sure the call into your OB's office will put your mind at ease and then of course they will let you now if there is anything you should be concerned about. Be sure to keep us posted.

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
Update - My OB called in a blood test just to be safe. So once my furniture delivery shows up, I'll do that.
And after that phone call my MIL called (Ian is at her house today) and said that he now has the rash on his body (it's only been on his cheeks so far). So I'm quite sure this is what he has. Not sure they can do much about it, but let it runs it's course. But I left a message with is doctor so they could let us know how to proceed. I hope it's something that clears up quickly!
Thanks again ladies!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
Glad to hear the consensus is that the risk is earlier in pg. Let us know if you learn more. In any case, I hope you don't get sick!

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
lurking from DIMarch
my DD had it last year. the most noticeable symtom is the lacey rash. her ped basically said it had to run it's course and clear up on it's own, which it did in a couple of days. she also asked if DD was around anyone that was pregnant (i wasn't at the time). so it's good that you let you OB know and they're taking neccessary precaution.

Re: Fifth Disease?? (slapped cheek)
The doc wants to see him tomorrow just to confirm. He prefers to see the rash to be sure. But I had my blood draw already, so not sure it's totally necessary. But better safe than sorry!
