This is something that my DH and I desperately wanted to do but with all our immigration craziness and not knowing where we were going to have the baby we missed signing up for it as its not offered at the hospital here you have to set it up well in advance. I personally think that it truly is a GREAT thing if you can do it and afford it. It is very expensive (well the initial out put for processing the sample but then the yearly coast we found very affordable). I know in Canada there are different banks you can use but in the US I believe there is a "patent" that one bank holds so if you do not use them you have to pay them a royalty (this caused us more issues with not knowing till too late where our little was going to be born). I am not 100% sure how it works in the US still though.

I know there have been great advancements with the research and use of stem cells and it’s truly amazing. I think if you have any family history of cancer and such it’s truly a great back up to have if possible.

Not sure if this helped you.....good luck with your decision.

I bank with Viacord. I picked them because they seem to be frontrunner in research right now and even have some very hopeful news for juvenile diabetes. I banked my daughter Ari's and my other daughter Scarlett's and this one will be banked as well. Having gone through many diseases in my family with devastating results, I find it comforting and reassuring that science can do many things with my baby's stem cells, which hopefully they will never have to use. I pay an annual fee or you have the option to do multiple years of storage at a discount. Some hospitals have donation banks meaning they do not charge a fee to bank, but I think you are donating and the cells do not belong to you. For our family, it's just another type of insurance. I know there are certain childhood cancers that are greatly helped by stem cells and by using your own or your family's then there is no wait finding a possible match. It is costly, but to us, worth it.

My doctor offered me free cord blood banking. It doesnt guarentee that we can use it but hopefully someone else will be able to use it.
Most hospitals throw it away right now but if they all kept it and did the free cord blood banking then i think it could help a lot of people.

We did it through Cryo-cell. The up front cost is expensive (they have lots of payment plans), but they reimburse the doctor's fee. And the yearly is managable. I agree that it is like another insurance--you hope that you never use it, but I would completely regret it if we chose not to and then needed it. If you can afford it, I say go for it.

We donated to the public bank. It didn't cost us anything, and hopefully it will be able to help someone. I figured that was better than them just throwing it out.
