BF Question
Does your baby eat on both sides at each feeding?
Dylan only eats one side per feeding. There are a few times that he has eaten on both sides and when he does he ends up throwing up from eating too much. I am not worried about it because he is satisfied and gaining weight. I know when he's ready for both sides he will let me know. I think I just produce loads of milk

Re: BF Question
Joshua has been eating mostly one side at a time lately. His appetite isn't as big since he's not feeling well, so I'm not sure if it'll change. As long as you alternate, all should be fine.

Re: BF Question
Delaney usually finishes one side and starts on the other. Depending on the time of day she will sometimes even go back to the original side. LOL

Re: BF Question
That's what DS1 always did, from day 1, and always gained well Makes nursing in public easier, you only ever have to get one side out!

Re: BF Question
Yup, David usually empties one side and then goes to the other but never finishes it. Just make sure you're switching sides when you start the next session....

Re: BF Question
Carter is eating on both sides at all feedings, he nurses on one side for like 10 minutes, I burp him and then he nurses on the other side 8-10 minutes or until he falls asleep, I am in the minority, wonder if that is a problem... hum
Anyone else pumping daily? How much are you pumping at a time, I have been able to pump about 3-4 oz. a day, just wondering if that is normal
Sorry desi, I did not mean to take over your thread

Re: BF Question
Mariah is eating only 1 side now. I was feeding her on both but then she was getting gassy because I have pretty intense letdowns and she was gulping a lot of air with both sides. I also didnt let her nurse long enough to get the hind milk the lactation consultant said. This has helped so much! No more screaming baby. She even set me up with a nipple shield for the beginning of feeds so she doesnt choke1

Re: BF Question
My milk is in, until then I started on one side and switched to the other. Now it is one side til drained, then if she is still up to it I start her on the other. Most of the time it is one side only though.

Same here--I'm glad you asked though because I was wondering if that was ok. I knew that it was important to get the hind milk and sometimes he eats on both sides, but other times he is so dead asleep after one side that I can't get him to do anything but sleep. So I figure it's good enough and when he gets older he will be more consistent.
Nice to know we are all kind of dealing with the same thing though.

Re: BF Question
Nathan will nurse on both sides and sometimes seems hungry even after draining both sides. I pump daily and get about 6oz 3-4 times daily (about 24 oz total) of course, I have been pumping exclusively (nathan is not so good at breastfeeding, I have to wear a nipple sheild just to get him to eat... premies are funny!) so that may have something to do with why I have a large milk supply.

Re: BF Question
Aspen eats on one side only. I just try to remember which side I fed her on last and then feed her on the other side next time. She's such a lazy eater too. I have to be careful that she doesn't break her latch on my boob, because if she does, it's so hard to get her to wake up to go back on and finish eating.

Re: BF Question
Nope, never. Griffin never did either. I just alternate sides each feeding. Griffin gained plenty of weight when he was nursing and now Harrison is too. I know he is getting plenty.

Re: BF Question
Kayden falls asleep after 10 minutes (or less) on one side then wakes up 10-15 minutes later and wants to nurse again. I was switching breasts between these "mini-feedings" until the lactation consultant told me that this was causing gas and green stools b/c she didn't have time to get the hind milk. So, now I nurse her on the same breast for a few mini-feedings in a row, then I switch. This gives her the opportunity to drain one breast and get the hind milk before moving on to the other one. I think ultimately it depends on your particular situation, but as long as you're alternating breasts every 2 to 3 hours, you should be fine.

Re: BF Question
Same here. Reid eats from one side at a time. Rarely he will start the other side. He's almost 9 lbs now, so he's gaining well and his stools are bright mustard yellow, so I know he's getting plenty.
Aleise02, I get about 3-4oz when I pump too. I use a double pump after a feeding, and most of the milk will come from the side he didn't nurse on. But I don't pump everyday, just when he gets a bottle of BM if I'm away.
Brandie_mc, I wanted to tell you something no one told me with my twins, who were also preemies. They usually start nursing better at around their due date, which from your siggy, is about now. I pumped exclusively for my twins just like you are and never really tried to nurse because they were so lazy. If I had known that about the due date, then I might have tried harder. So hang in there. Nathan may just click one day and start nursing like a newborn.

Re: BF Question
I've pretty much got a one side eater too. My milk just came in last night. So, I've been trying to get her to drain one breast and if she is still hungry then I will offer the other one. However, she seems pretty content after nursing on one side and doesn't want the other one.
