Bad news at the OB checkup today
Yeah so I had my check up today, 24 weeks, should have just been normal but...
I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks (remember we couldn't determine the gender) and today is the first day I got to hear the results. It was determined that a thickened nuchal fold is visible (.6 cm) meaning there is a possible genetic abnormality.
Although my AFP test was neg for anything like that (Down syndrome and the like) the Physician's Assistant (PA) told me there was a possibilty of mild Down's. Further, the PA couldn't really answer any more questions because she said that she wasn't experienced enough. Keep in mind this nuchal fold was not visible at my 16 week ultrasound...
DH was totally pissed when he found out (he stayed at home) and immediately called the Dr's office and spoke with the PA. We are going to have an appointment tomorrow at 9:30am with the PA and one of the OBs. Maybe then we can get some answers.
Hopefully it is nothing. I asked the PA, What are the chances this is nothing? And she told me 50/50. So kindof unsettling news. Pray for us tomorrow girls and I will keep you all updated as to what's going on!

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
Oh Emily, I am so sorry. I truly hope that this will turn out to be nothing and the baby will be 100% healthy. I can completely understand your DH's anger. I would be LIVID that they waited a month after your u/s to tell you results like that. WTH?? You and your sweet baby are in my thoughts and I hope everything goes great tomorrow. Maybe they can re-do the u/s and hopefully confirm that all is good. ((((hugs)))) to you and your family. Please let us know how it goes tomorrow. We are here for you!!!

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
Thanks girls. Chances are it's nothing, esp. since that is just 1 indicator that they use to determine anything.
But talk about stress right? I hate that!!

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
Hey there Emily! Like I said on the other board, I imagine it's nothing. Especially since it's so late to determine anything. However, I would be upset also that the OB wasn't available to come in and talk to you about the news to help calrify things. Go to bed early so the morning comes faster! We'll be sending you some good thoughts tomorrow morning!

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
I am sooo sorry to hear that. I can't believe they sent in the PA if she wasn't experienced enough to answer your questions. I hope you get more answers tomarrow and I will be thinking about you.

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
Oh no, how hard are they trying to stress you guys out?!?! If the PA is new and didn't have the experience/training for this, she/he should NOT have given you any kind of news, they should have passed you to an OB who could talk with you, it's not like hearing "Oh, the baby will have brown hair" this is much more important than winging it!! So sorry y'all have to go through all this, keep us posted and GL, I hope it truley is nothing!! P&PT

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
That is weird that they waited so long to tell you about that.
I dont think the PA should have told you 50/50 chance b/c she does not know what she's talking about to give you what the chances are.
I hope everything will turn out to be just fine and you get much better news from someone that knows what they are talking about! *HUGS*

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
I can't believe they waited a month to tell you! I would be livid. Then to have a PA and not the OB! Boy, oh boy.
What level of ultrasound did you have? Level II or Level III? If it was a Level II I would get in contact with a Perinatologist and have a level III done. That would be my first step. Oh and a Geneticist!
Are you out of the window for an Amnio? I have had two of them and they aren't bad at all.

Re: Bad news at the OB checkup today
s I'd be livid too. A PA should NOT give news like that. They are not drs. An OB should have called you a month ago, and had the US redone (level III). I'd request a new US and an amnio when you go in tom. I hope it's nothing. Try to rest tonight, and update us when you can.
