Icon5 Baby Constipation....

Hi guys,

I am starting to get worried about Mackenzie. She has had good regular dippers till today and then things have changed. She has had lots of wet dippers but no poopy ones since last night. It’s coming up on 24 hours.....at what point do I need to truly worry? She has had lots of gas both ends and her little tummy is soft and not hard but I am worried her formula is not agreed with her. She has been eating regularly today and not spitting up much (its all in the normal range) but eh dipper thing is worrying me.

I am going to call the doc in the morning if she has not gone but I though I would ask and see if I am over reacting.

TIA

At Tristan's 2 weeks apointment the doctor told me that around this time there is a change in bowel movements. She said they are less freaquent (sometimes evern 3-4 day in between) and that as long as when he does poo its soft, and he should be having lots of gas, so I guess its normal?

I think it's normal, but it never hurts to call, especially if it's been longer than 24 hours. My sister is dealing with the same thing with her baby girl too (she's 5 weeks old). Once she switched her over to formula she started getting more constipated. But when she called the pedi they said it was normal and she could mix 1 tsp of Karo Syrup in her formula if she wanted. Not sure if I would do that or not, but you could always see what your pedi suggests!

I think it's totally normal. I remember at one point with one of my kids, there would be days between bowel movements and the ped said it could go up to 7-8 days but as long as they were not straining when it did come, that was fine. Not sure if it is doifferent for BF vs. FF though. I saved a lot of money on diapers when there was days between poops though!

It wouldn't hurt to call the doctor and it will definately hope to put your mind at ease. Hope something happens soon!

I think calling the doc wouldn't be a bad idea. Kaytana got constipated before I put her on Good Start, and I used Karo syrup and water to help get things moving for her. It worked well while she was adjusting to the change of formula, then she was all good Good luck

I 2nd Ann's suggestion of changing to Good Start if you have it available...if her poops seem to be pretty formed when she does go especially. As the others have said it's not abnormal for a ff baby to go several days w/o pooping- one woman told me that her son used to go only every 10 days! That seems crazy but it was his schedule I guess.

When Derek was a baby though he seemed to strain when he went and when he did it was very formed and a little hard. We had him on Enfamil at the time and changed him to Good Start- it made all the difference.

Good luck with it though- and let us know what the doc says if you call. It won't hurt to let them know what is going on and get an opinion from them!

My dd was formula fed and I honestly cant remember about her bm. But with my bf babies they would go several days without having a bm and then totally unload, so bad they leak!
Honestly though, I dont think I would worry even with formula fed unless it goes several days. I dont know that I would want to change formulas just yet. If its only been 1 day since bm. But of course if you feel uncomfortable call the pedi. GL!

Amanda - I know you are doing the Good Start, so that's not the issue. Natalie has periods where she doesnt go for a day or 2, then suddenly makes up for it with 4 in a day. You are doing fine mama. Mackenzie is using all the food you are giving her, and she doesn't have any "leftovers" for the diaper.
