Air travel while pregnant???
How far along is it that they do not want you to fly? I was again headed for my OB appt today, when I got a text from KJ to call him. So I called, and he told me his grandfather died last night. He lives in Alberta - Next province over. So I cancelled my appt, made it for monday bc him and his uncle are too upset to work and are he will be home soon. He wants me here when he comes home. I felt so bad for him bc he was crying and I could only say I am sorry. Anyways, so he wants me to go to the funeral next week too, but I am not sure if they will let me fly out at that point, or if we will have to drive. I have my OB appt moved to monday, and we will probably leave after that. The receptionist told me I would need to be checked out first before I leave.. I will be 33 1/2 weeks. I am also wondering if anyone who has had a subchorionic hemmorage would know if they let you fly with that. I have no clue bc I have never flown before.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
O no! Im so sorry about your dh's grandfather!!
My SIL was going to fly when she was 8 months. She didnt end up going b/c she didnt want to, but she was told by the airline if she got a note from her doctor saying it was ok then they would accept that. The was here in the US though. I guess you would have to first call the airline you are thinking of using and see what their policy is and then if need be get a note from your ob.
*HUGS!*

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
I would check with your doctor. I'm really sorry to hear about your DH's grandpa. If the Dr says you can fly, make sure you check with the airline, too. Not only because of the pregnancy, but because I have heard airlines are having a lot of maintenance troubles and hundreds of flights have been delayed and cancelled. I can't imagine being stranded in an airport would be very comfortable right now.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
I talked to DH, and he said if we can't fly, he wants to take greyhound. I lent my car to my sis and have not gotten it back yet, and do not want to borrow a car for the trip, so we will probably go greyhound. Well, if they have no probs with taking a pregnant woman onto the bus. From the sounds of it, I won't be able to fly.

Sorry about your DH's grandpa. I agree call the OB and the airline. I think most airlines here won't let you in the third trimester. I'm not sure about the bus either. You'll probably want to give them a call too, they might have special rules too. Which ever way you go make sure you get up and move around every once in a while.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
Sorry to hear about your husband's grandfather. My dr said I cannot travel after 32 weeks so you might want to give your dr a call. Plus the airlines are all screwy - you might not beable to catch a flight anyway.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
By bus the trip is 14-16 hours depending what time we leave. By plane a little over 1. We are probably taking bus, and will just sleep on it overnight. I see my OB monday, and will ask her if she can clear me for travel then.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
I'm really sorry about DH's grandfather
FWIW, Delta and AirTran, which I both fly frequently, have a policy of 36 weeks. They ask once you get to about 8M or so to have some sort of written verification of your EDD because it's hard to judge exactly how far along people are. I know you won't be on either one of those airlines, but you may want to check w/ the individual airline and see if any others have that policy.
There is no risk to the baby to fly- the only risk is that if you go into labor, you'd sort of ruin everyone on the plane's day, as they'd have to land immediately by law (American law anyway, don't know about Canadian but I imagine the same) On the other hand, if you're only going to be in the air for an hour, the closest airport they'd have to land at is most likely the one you're going to anyway. So, if you have no reason to think you'd go into labor this early, I'd give it a go.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
I'm so sorry
Most airlines you don't need a doc note til 37wks...I would feel very comfortable flying at 33.5-the stage I'm at...? 37 and constant contractions...not so much

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
My doc restricts any travel of more than an hour - by plane, bus, boat, anything - after 32 weeks. The issue isn't the actual act of traveling but being that far from the hospital I am delivering at. Especially cause if you have an early baby, you could be going to and from the NICU for days or weeks. I am restricted from going to my cousins wedding in 2 weeks and its only an hours drive away. But each doctor is different, if you are not dilating or anything, they will probably let you go for it, given the circumstances. Oh, another issue is blood clots so they would probably suggest the plane over the bus so you'd be seated for less time.

Re: Air travel while pregnant???
Sorry to hear about DH Grandfather..
I'm sure if your only flying one province over ... the plane will probably not gain too much altitude and the flight would be short enough that if labour started... you'd be landed in time.. I would first check with the ob and then call the airlines.. It wouldn't hurt to check out WestJet and Air Canada's website (I think their smaller commuter planes are called Jazz or Tango or something)
I'm not sure about the hemeroge thing... again...the altitude probably isn't going to be that high if you are just going between provinces -higher than the rockies of course : )
I would think sitting on a greyhound for 8 or 9 hours and bumping around and being on the transcanada would be more of a risk for a pregnant lady in her 9th month...but that's just me.
