So I had my OB appt today. Doc said that I'm 80% effaced but closed. He said he doesn't want me to go into my 40th week, so as long as everything is looking good and I haven't gone into labor on my own, he will break my water next week. How exciting!! But, I have a question: Can they break your water if you're not dilated?? Seems like I remember reading risks about this or something too. Anyone know?
I think it is risky, because if they break your water and you aren't ready and it doesn't send you into labor, they will do a c-section because they won't let you go too long w/your water broken because of 'risk of infection.' I wouldn't do it...
Sounds like a good apt. I am not sure on the water breaking thing either. I though you had to be dilated a little for it to be done. I hope someone else will have an answer for you.

Hmm... I hear you about the c-section risk. My doc's c-section rate is less than 5% though, so I wonder if he would break my water unless he felt certain I was ready. I'll be sure to mention this next week before anything is done. Thank you for that input!!
Well, from what I hear and know, effacement is more important the dialation for getting things moving. Not too sure about breaking water before dialation, as my OB said they don't do it unless you are 1-2cm at least. Maybe bc of the risk though bc I am VBAC... I dunno. Best of luck, at least you have a finish line put up... if the baby does not beat the OB to it that is.
Woo hoo. Sounds like you have a plan in place. Also not sure on the water breaking as well. Had a c/s with DS and Vbac with DD, but I had already started to dilated and was effaced when my water broke on it's own. Good luck and KUP!!!!
Sounds like a pretty good visit. Maybe the Dr. is expecting that since you are so effaced you will dilate before the next apt?
When I was induced w/ my dd they gave me a medication to help 'ripen' the cervix. I think it was called cytotek? foggy memory on that. Anyway, I think that was the firs step, then pitocin, then breaking my water.
Good luck to you - maybe labor will get going before your next visit!
Let me tell ya.......you can go a very long time with your water broken. I was over 3 weeks! Yes, there is a risk of infection, which is why they admit you as soon as the water is ruptured. Keeps you from DTD or other things that could introduce bacteria to cause that infection. No worries, and good luck. KUP - we want instant pictures
Thanks for all the advice girls! I'm hoping my little one comes along without any "nudging" from the doc, but we'll see! And, I'll be sure to keep everyone updated. These are exciting times for the board!
I don't think I would want my water broken before i was dilated, but that's just me. Good luck next week...and, who knows, maybe you'll go on your own before then.
