Default so it went pretty bad yesterday

Sorry it took me so long to make this post. I was so mad last night I needed some time to cool off. Plus, Laci was not feeling well and was very cranky after her shots so I very busy with her last night. This morning at work has been very hectic as well.

I am copying this from an email that I sent my pediatrician yesterday:

I wanted to let you know that I am very upset after our appointment today.

Recently I emailed you to ask if it would be ok for me to try nursing Laci while she had her shots and you were fine with that. I know you remembered, which meant a lot to me, because you mentioned it before her exam.

The nurse we had today who weighed and measured Laci (shoulder length straight blonde hair) was very cold and unfriendly to us from the moment she called us from the waiting room.

Before the exam, when she was putting info on Laci's chart, I mentioned that I was going to nurse her during the shots and she didn't say anything. Then you came in and again said that it was fine to do. We had a very pleasant visit with you, but then you left and the nurse came in again for the shots.

The first thing she said was that I couldn't hold Laci and had to put her on the table. I told her that no, I was going to nurse her. She said that I couldn't and I told her that I had already discussed it with you and you said that it would be fine. She said that she didn't have room to work with me holding Laci and that she would have to go on the table. After going back and forth with her a few times I asked her to go talk to you because I really wanted to try nursing during her shots.

When I asked her to go get you she very rudely and loudly said that she was NOT going to give Laci her shots and she stomped out of the room.

After she left the room saying that she would not do the shots, she did come back in once and said that she couldn't find anyone else that would agree to do it either (give shots while I nursed). I told her that I would wait to talk to you and then she stormed out again.

Then another nurse (short curly red hair- Lisa) came and did Laci's shots and she was very friendly.

On my way out I stopped at the nurses station to get a note for work and the nurse with the straight blonde hair would not adknowledge me at all. After several minutes of Ricky, Laci and I standing there, Lisa came over and wrote me a note for work.

Laci only cried for a few seconds, which was much better than I rememered shots being when Maggie and Ricky were small. John brought Laci in for her two month shots and he said that she cried for about ten minutes that day, so I do think that nursing her did help comfort her.

When Lisa came into the room to help, she had no problem with it at all and the shots were then over in less than a minute. I just don't think there was any reason at all for the blonde haired lady to cause a scene in front of Ricky and then to refuse to give Laci her shots.

I hope you can educate the nurses, because the research that I did indicated that nursing during shots helps to ease their pain. I tried to explain this to the nurse, but she was adamant that she was not going to allow me to nurse or even hold Laci.

The pediatrician did email me back last night and tell me that she was also very upset to get my email. She said that while I was in the office she had no idea what was going on. None of the nurses ever told her that I had asked to speak with her.

She said that she would be discussing this with all of her staff and that it would not happen again.

While I did sort-of get to nurse Laci, she had pulled off to look around because of all the drama going on and when they stuck her she wasn't latched well. I think if the situation had been calmer and Laci had been engrossed in nursing (like she was before the idiot nurse came in and told me I had to put her on the table) then it would have gone even better than it did.

and my poor baby was just not herself last night or this morning. I hate, hate, hate getting shots. I am so worried that I am not making the right decision in regards to the vaccines causing autism and such. I am at work today and I miss her so much. I need to have my happy baby back and know that she is going to be ok.

What a b****!! I hope that she got/gets the reprimand that she deserves! She probably didnt even ask the other nurses anything. I hope that you dont get her the next time that you go to the dr!

How was Laci otherwise?

I hope that she is her usual self soon. Shots definately suck.

Wow, thats terrible! I'm sorry you had to go through that, I hope she gets a proper reprimand and in the future you won't have any issues with the nurses! I also hope Laci is back to her normal self soon!

I dont understand people like that...why would you want to be a nurse in a pediatric office if you dont have the personality for it. She must know that us momma's will do anything to make our LO's as happy and comfy as can be. I cannot believe her, I'm mad just thinking about it.

OH...I hope Laci is doing well, and dont feel bad about doing the vaccines. I've decided for me, its the right thing to do, but there is a "delayed" vaccination schedule that I believe Dr. Sears has a book about that might make you more comfortable with them.

Wow that was rude of that nurse... can't believe that she actually walked out and REFUSED to do the shots! What a terrible kind of attitude to have, especially in an environment with kids (and their mommies). I hope you never have to deal with her again. UGHH

I can't believe how rude people can be! Good grief! Addi had a low-grade fever the day following her shots but was fine after two doses of Tylenol (so about 10 hours). I'm just shaking my head about that nurse, It doesn't sound like she likes her job at all.

Wow, that sounds like one rotten nurse. On the other hand, it sounds like Laci's ped. is pretty nice. I'm really sorry you and Laci had to go through that. I haven't even talked to Irene's dr. about nursing during shots but her appt. is this evening. I'd like not to encounter anything similar. I sure hope Laci is feeling better from her shots. And I hope that rotten nurse is relieved of her duties.

Emily- I hope you don't have any problems. I really do think it made a difference (and could have been even better). It is definitely worth it to try!

Sorry you had such a horrible experience but it's a good thing that your doctor took your concern seriously and is taking measures to ensure it wont happen again. I didn't nurse Liam during his shots yesterday but I did have his pacifier in his mouth while he got them and he did so much better than his 2 month shots. It may have made the difference.

Wow, that is awful! I hope that nurse can get a nice job working as a nurse in a prison or something. Sheesh.

It really is hard to decide what's best about vaccinations. I found The Vaccine Book pretty helpful in our decisions. It's one of those issues that isn't as black and white for me as other things.
