Has anyone had to introduce cereal yet? Nathan is already up to 13lbs and eatting 6oz every 2 2. hours...except night time when he sleeps about 5-6hours. Doc and everyone around me told me to introduce cereal to him and it will help to cut back on the amout of times we have to feed.

Everything I've heard kept saying 4 months and later... for solids.

But everything also keeps saying that all babies are different and have different needs. What one baby is ready for at 6 months, another baby might be ready for at 4 months... its so hard when there isn't a SET guide huh? If you feel that your little one is ready, and the DOCTOR even suggested it... then maybe its time?

Oh, also.. does he seem to be digesting his food very easily? No signs of digestive turmoil like gas, constipation, and the such... might be a sign that his digestive system is WELL-developed and ready to move onto other things. But hey hey!!! hang on a second.. I'm not a doctor and dont quote me on any of this! lol I'm just brainstorming here. I've thought about this quite a bit since Mikeyla time for solids is coming sooner rather than later.

From what I've been able to find out... there's conflicting information on starting solids early. Some places say that starting solids early is just fine, but some go to such extremes as to say "starting solids too early can trigger food allergies, eczema and asthma".

It's really a toss up, and youre his mommy so.... good luck with what you decide!

I started Owen on cereal at 2 months, and he did fine. Davis had so many problems we tried everything. But Ali is definitely not ready and she is also a big baby, almost 15 lbs. So anyway what I am trying to say is it totally depends on you as his mother and him as an individual.

I won't be introducing solids til 6 months. Personally, I don't see a point as feeding solids is a PITA. It's exciting at first, then it's just a pain. There isn't nutritional value in the beginners food, it's just for practice and the (Canadian) pediatric society doesn't recommend it.

Anecdotal evidence, but DD1 was started on solids at 4 months of age (this was before they raised the age 'limit' to 6 months) and she has asthma and get sick fairly often (and has spent a week in hospital). DD2 started at 6 months and never gets sick. They were both BF'ed past age 2 and both big kids (DD1 was almost 15 lbs at 2 months of age - I just looked this up to see where Natalia was compared to her sisters, Natalia was 13 lbs 4 oz at her 2 month check up).

Not yet, but the ped. did say when we were there last that once she is up to 13lbs and is taking and entire 32oz ready to feed container in one day (with out any waste) that she is ready for cereal, but of coarse the tongue reflex has to be gone also.

My pediatrician hasnt mentioned anything. I think we will wait awhile as well. Maddie still doesn't drink 4oz in one sitting everytime she gets feed. Good luck with the cereal though.

My kids didn't want anything to do with solids until 9-10 months and then it was pretty much soft foods they could pick up on their own. I think cereal is a nutrition-less waste of time (and a mess too).

I'll wait till closer to 6 months to try out other foods...I dont like to mess with their digestive systems. Both of my older boys had food sensitivites...diarrhea and rashes, and they werent too interested in eating. My mom and MIL are anxious to be able to feed Josiah though, so they my "push" me into trying stuff sooner (push in a nice way I like my MIL and mom). My nieces and nephews have food allergies/sensitivities and my boys seemed to have fruit sugar sensitivities, so they'll understand if I wait - I hope! OH - rice cereal was very hard on my first son...I totally skipped it with my second (it made him gassy/constipated). We didnt really do the cereal at all....well, we didnt really do baby food either, LOL, just waited till they could actually eat food

i just realized Nathan and Katie are only a day apart and it just shows how different each baby is. She hardly drinks more than 2oz every 2 1/2 -3 hours

We will wait until 4-6 months. I think it really depends on the baby... DS was watching us eat and crying... he was ready but Mia may not be and we don't want to push her

Funny how that it, with DD2, she practically went to finger foods as well. I had a box of cereal which we never finished, I don't even think we got half way through it. Yet DD1, who we started early at 4 months 1 week old went through boxes and boxes of cereal. At 14 months she was still eating baby food (pureed pears) for breakfast LOL.

we tried connor on cereal at 5 months but he really didn't start eating it until 6 months. like others said, it was fun at first but then it became a pain. sarah is barely getting in 20-22 ounces a day so she's nowhere close to ready.

anj, connor will still eat the pureed stuff to this day. sometimes he'll refuse to eat regular green beans, we hand him a jar of baby green beans and he'll go to town. occasionally we'll give him one of the stage 3 dinners if he can't/won't eat what we're having. why not?

I won't start Addi on food until 5-6 months, no need really. I don't think we ever finished a box of cereal either. Oh wait, I think the girls liked the oatmeal but not he rice cereal. Anyway, good luck!

We will wait as long as possible. 4 months minimum, maybe 6 if we can.

Laci is 13 lbs and drinks at least 32oz a day, but I'm not ready to feed her solids. She only got the hang of nursing three weeks ago.... and I don't want to rush her onto other things!

Funny you ask, our little guy was like this too. We started him on cereal solids a few weeks ago and never looked back. He's done absolutely fine with it and he's much more content between feedings (both cereal and bottle). P.S. we are putting fruits in with his cereal and he's done just fine. Lillie was on solids pretty early as well. They both had big appetites. She has never shown any kind of adverse effects from starting either. It's really to each his own. Good Luck!
