We can't have what??

Posted 02-08-2008 at 11:27 PM by RainsTribe
Ever notice the ever growing list of foods and drinks we can't have while PG?
Just off the top pf my head....
Coffee / Tea / Soda - culprit: Caffeine - recent studies show it increases the risk of miscarriage!
Cold cuts - culprit: Listeria
Nuts - culprit: allergies
Fish (up to 12 oz a week) - culprit: mercury
The list really does go on and on... then we have a list of OTC medications that we can and cannot have as well as the obvious no smoking or drinking. While I totally can agree and see the point on some things, I also think that maybe, things are just too overly dramatized! - And making these poor, already hormonally challenged and emotionally charged pg women, stressed out!

So, when we had a post come up on banned foods, I had to put my lil 2 cents up too.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"See, I LOVE coffee, But alas, I've been coffee - free for a while, right now, due to heartburn. But, when I found out I was pg, it was down to 1 cup of half caff a day from one WHOLE POT.
I'm not much on ice cream but I have had a milkshake, wow, see, look at how aweful I am! I also ate tuna sandwiches, and then long john silvers fish - in the same week! I've eaten at subway, I had a lil wine at Christmas Eve on our wedding night, I had a sip or two of Champagne at New Years and I've let the baby slobber all over me even tho there is a threat of CMV from infants and toddlers. I eat nuts too, pistachios have been my latest craving. I eat these things every day and don't even think about it, not on purpose, just that it doesn't occur to me... maybe because I have been a pg woman forever and a day and these studies come and go and I get the handouts and most likely, i just forget about some things.
If I stuck to just salads, I'd have caught e-coli too, look how many times in the last 6 months something was pulled off the shelves for that... meats, veggies, frozen pizza's, etc.
I think we could get a list about half a mile long on things we aren't allowed to eat, drink, be near, touch, smell, or put on.

Yes, we have come a long way, back 20 yrs ago on my first baby, they didn't discourage smoking, drinking or the like, they said everything should be done in moderation, my Mom said it was the same way back when... Mind you, I agree some of those habits shouldn't be done while being pg anyway, but I can see the trend on how a "healthy" pregnancy is being determined.
Maybe it's that now, we are having much more contaminates introduced to us, we have more imports, exports, more people in the kitchen so to speak.... We dang sure have alot more products. and way too much information.
Now, we have to give up everything. Soon, we will all be eating bland toast and crackers drinking nothing but triple filtered spring mountain water from tibet from some virgin spring that yak's can't get to so our water doesn't have piddle in it. Then again, they will find that toast is carcinogenic because of heating it and we will be left with piddle free yak water. nice huh?
sorry about the thread jack... all I am saying is, don't make yourselves crazy over every little thing. Enjoy the things you love and do it in moderation -( not like, go booze yourself to oblivion, you know what I mean, LOL ) just keep a cautious eye on things and by no means, have a soft serve cone from some snot-nosed kid who just picked a winner and went potty, never washing their hands and is trying to pull the lever on the machine while holding the cone... hmmm, would make me wanna toss the cookies I can't have!"

amen, sister! i could never give up my coffee, so i settled for one cup of half caff a day until i got past the first trimester, then slowly ramped it back up again. as for most of the other things, i used some common sense and usually ate them anyway.

Girl if you have any questions what so ever about what you can and cannot have when prego contact the Texas Teratogen Information Pregnancy Risk Line at 1-800-733-4727. It is completely free and they will let you know how much and of what is safe or not safe. They really helped me when I found out I was hypothyroid.
