I am in my last year of my twenties, divorced mama (successfully co-parenting with her daddy) to the brilliant three-year-old (someone remind me to update this description in 2009, would you?) Sophia, and a skater for my local rollerderby league
I have been a member of SheKnows since 2004 when I was pregnant with Sophia and have been amazed by the friendships and connections I have formed here. Cheesy? Yes. Also very, very true.
I parent, I work, I skate (turn left).

When It's Okay To Hit

Oh, lordy, not what you think!
This is roller derby, people!
Tonight is a regularly-scheduled practice, but it's going to be a little different - we have guest skaters coming from a nearby league to practice/scrimmage with us. This will be our first time since our exhibition bout in December (which we sadly lost) practicing another team.
I'm excited, mostly because our league is pumped to begin fixing the things that caused us to lose last time, namely:
1. Communication
2. Speed - especially speed while...
3. Engaging!
We've really seen firsthand how we need to talk more during play - let each other know what we're doing. However, the big problem for us is initiating contact.
When most people think about roller derby, the first thing they imagine is women knocking each other over - that's absolutely correct, when you're doing it right. Our league is VERY good at hitting and taking hits, but just not good about doing it first - often, when another team fails to initiate contact, we forget that a key strategy is to hit FIRST.
So the point of this post is mostly to remind myself as I go into practice tonight to hit, to hit hard, and most importantly, to hit FIRST.
And just so you have a visual, here's the link to our 2008 promo video, made up of clips from our exhibition bout - I'm in there, but nearly impossible to point out. I'm in the jumble of girls in pink and black:

I think I would do well at this derby business. In basketball I always received the award for "most aggressive" ...
It hurts less when you do it first ![]() |

Amy, I only wish it was my job!
But to update you all: we creamed them! So many things we could have done better, but with a final score of 44-7, I can't complain...am more than a little sore right now, but I can say I gave as good as I got (and got clocked in the chin once, thrown up into the air at least twice, and got slammed to the floor who knows how many times)(but you should see the other girl... |

Sounds like a lot of fun! Glad you got the best shot! Are you as vicious as the girls in the movies?
