Severe Morning Sickness- Part 2

Part 2: ZOFRAN PUMP-I was discharged from the hospital, they sent me home with an order to be placed on a Zofran Pump.A nurse from Alere Home Health Care came out to my house the next day to give me everything I needed. How a Zofran pump works is you have a little needle that you have to stick into your leg that inserts a very small catheter.Once the catheter is inserted, you connect tubing that leads up to the liquid medicine in a syringe. The syringe sits in a pump that you carry in a bag that has a strap so you wear it like a little purse 24/7.You program the pump to automatically discharge the medicine back down the tubing into the catheter in your leg which distributes the medicine into the tissue of your leg.You unfortunately need to stick yourself with the needle every 2 days because you need to rotate legs and spots on your leg because the medicine is so strong and the spot on your leg will not be able to tolerate more than 48hrs.The overall affected area is only just bigger than a quarter, however are very tender and sore days after it is removed even.Hot compresses are recommended to help with that.At the beginning, they started me at .500 ml but even then,I was still throwing up.They increased my dosage after 48hrs to .600ml.So do not be afraid if you are still feeling sick. They calculate the dosage by how much you weigh and your height, not by how sick you are. They also give you strips to test for dehyration. After 4 days of being home, and still vomiting and trying to work out the kinks with the pump,I became dehydrated again.Luckily I did not have to go back to the hospital. An Alere nurse came back to my house and put me back on IV fluids where I spent another 3 days from home having my mom change the IV bag.Once my ketones were negative and reflecting I was once again hydrated and the dosage in my pump increased, I finally felt some relief. From there, I began to feel better with each day and became bolder with my food intake.I have been on the pump for 20 days now and have been slowly weening off the medicine with the hopes of only another 7 days on it.My experience with the Zofran pump was painful at times, but more just uncomfortable. And in the end, these pregnancy symptoms were not indicators that I had a unhealthy pregnancy or baby.

I am so sorry that you had that experience. I feel for you. I am now in my second trimester with my second one and I am worried about my severe morning sickness. I am new here and did not read the part one but I am happy for you having a healthy child. With my first one it was eight out of nine months sick but somehow tollerable. This one not so much. I am misserable from morning to night and now I am having trouble keeping even water down. No milk based products or fruit juice or gaterade. I can keep food down IF I eat what I crave which is mostly chicken and do not drink while I eat, but now I am having trouble keeping water down. I am getting a bit worried and NONE of the meds they gave me for this sort of thing is working at all so I had to stop taking it... they were making me worse.Thank you for sharing your story... it gave me hope.
