Re: Kelli - Racechick24
Hi, Julie!
Here is our experience: My son also had a hypospadias repair so he may have had more pain from that than the circ.
His surgery took about 40 minutes total. At our hospital (Nationwide Children's in Columbus, OH), they do not give an IV or injections until the baby is asleep. They give a gas to them to make them sleep and then most will have a breathing tube inserted. After they are asleep, they insert the IV.
Owen was very groggy and sleepy after the surgery. He was in recovery for about 45 minutes and they released him to go home. He had a bandage wrapped around his penis that had to be in place for 2 days. He was only allowed sponges baths until the bandage was removed. He ended up having a huge bowel movement on day 2 and we had an awful time trying to remove the dressing. It is very painful for them as the bandage tends to adhere pretty good. I'd recommend soaking them in the tub for 15 minutes to help loosen the bandage.
He wasn't able to straddle any toys, like walker or jumparoo, for 2 weeks. His sleeping pattern was off for several weeks after the surgery but it's now returning to normal. They did give him Tylenol with Codeine for any pain and for the first few days I made sure to give it to him as prescribed every 4 hours.
He was pretty much back to acting like himself within 3-4 days.
Hope I have answered your questions. If I didn't, please ask more! I hope everything goes well with your son's surgery.
